Home improvements don’t need to be costly. In fact, many improvements that you need to make can be done with old fashioned sweat equity – and a little innovation. Let’s take a closer look.
To get some home improvement work done for little or no dollar cost, try these ideas:
1) To begin with, if you need major or minor home system improvements like plumbing work, carpentry work or other skilled labor, see if you can trade. See what you may have to offer in exchange like using your lawn mower, trimmers and rake and doing lawn care all month in exchange for work on your kitchen pipes. Or maybe you have automotive skills you can trade or baking / cooking skills.
2) Tackle your own yard improvements by handling the basics on your own. For example, find storage areas for yard equipment (rakes, broom, trash / recycle containers), children's toys, BBQ gear; move those old junk cars and other objects.
3) No need to hire an expensive yard service to get a green yard. Head to your local garden supply store and find out which yard products to use for your neighborhood. You can wear golf shoes (or any with cleats) for aeration, spread your own fertilizers and do your own seeding.
4) Spruce up your exterior by trimming and edging around your driveway, sidewalks, trees, patio and other areas in need. And set out some inexpensive flower boxes or hanging plants. Plant flower and vegetable gardens, too, add a birdbath, small fountain or pond and nice bench for relaxing.
5) Don’t forget about your screens. Give them a facelift with mesh and rubber kits, if the frames are still in good shape.
6) Work on windows, too. Replace cracked and broken panes with new ones from local stores (call ahead for pricing).
7) On the inside, get rid of old carpeting. If possible, think about replacing it one room or area at a time, as your budget allows. Or use throw rugs instead, if you have good flooring. Spruce up your welcome mats and area rugs by picking up new ones at wholesale or outlet stores or online at eBay.
So don’t get too stressed out when the topic of home improvements comes up. You can easily do some with low cost and no cost solutions. Just take a little time, do some research and see what you can come up with – be creative!
